I am Weijia (Fitz) Feng, originally from Vancouver and currently residing in Los Angeles. Renowned for my confidence and determination, I have a penchant for utilizing materials such as wood, acrylic, glass, and paper, employing clever transformations and minimalist textures to achieve sophisticated visual effects. Possessing keen insight, I am attuned to life's absurdities and wondrous details, while also being passionate about street photography, vinyl collecting, and cinema. Finding joy in bringing my ideas to life in the studio, I prioritize hands-on creation. Although my work was favored by the "TIDE New Youth 2023 Contemporary Art Exhibition" in Regent Street, London, I opted out of participation due to the compromise of shipping my pieces independently. In my artworks, I seldom express explicit viewpoints, preferring to present objective realities that provoke contemplation of the world. I enjoy incorporating conflicting elements like sharpness and roundness, roughness and smoothness, to generate tension-filled visual effects. Purchasing my creations is an honor for customers, as they represent a symbol of discernment.
My interest in the Product Design (PD) major is deeply rooted in my fascination with the design of furniture and audio-visual equipment, which I believe fundamentally differs from other design disciplines. Unlike automotive, fashion, or graphic design, where the products must navigate social contexts and personal aesthetics, furniture and audio-visual equipment design remain pure. These designs are introspective, crafted solely for the user's benefit, devoid of societal labels, class distinctions, or external evaluations. This purity in design allows for a genuine connection between the product and its user, emphasizing utility and personal experience over external perceptions.
Moreover, I cherish the process of physically crafting the items I design, infusing my creations with personal interpretation and a commitment to excellence. This hands-on approach not only enhances my connection with the design but also deepens my understanding of the materials and techniques involved.
Lastly, I view product design as a broad and diverse field, offering the expansive opportunity to widen my horizons and develop in various directions. The multidisciplinary nature of PD encourages a holistic approach to design, prompting me to explore beyond my comfort zone and embrace a wider range of possibilities in my future career.
